ARLINGTON, Texas — Cooperative national home furnishings and mattress buying group recently honored retiring board members at their annual symposium.

Lisa Hawkins of Room to Room Furniture in Tupelo, Miss., and Matt Meusey of Wagner’s Home Furnishings in Missoula, Mont., received plaques for their service. Mike Albert of Pilgrim Furniture City in Milford, Conn., was also recognized in absentia. The three-day event saw a record attendance of more than 370 retailers and sponsors.

Highlights included the ‘Best Idea’ competition and a keynote by sales and leadership expert Ryan Estis. In the competition, Furniture First members, grouped in tables of 10, presented impactful business ideas ranging from marketing strategies to operational improvements. Each table voted on a winner, who then presented their idea to all attendees. Pam Miller of Miller Home Furniture & Mattress in Falls Creek, Pa., won for her customer loyalty program strategy.

Ryan Estis, who had previously spoken at the 2019 symposium, discussed themes from his new book, “Prepare for Impact: Driving Growth and Serving Others through the Principles of Human-Centered Leadership.” Attendees received copies of the book.

“It’s great to kick off the tenure of our new board members with an in-person planning meeting,” said Andrew Kauffman, CEO of Furniture First. “It helps them to get to know our staff better and understand the full scope of the services we offer.”

The symposium concluded with the announcement of next year’s event, scheduled for June 2-4, 2025, at the Hilton West Palm Beach & Palm Beach Convention Center in Florida. Following the symposium, the Furniture First board and staff held a planning meeting to develop new benefits and initiatives.
