estudio soroche transforms PERUVIAN house into café

Cusco-based interior design and furniture practice Estudio Soroche transforms an old colonial Peruvian house into a women-led . Florencia y Fortunata Speciality Coffee, born in Andes, , is a social project and café that works on the visibility and opportunities for women throughout the entire coffee production chain, from origin to cup. The casona was renovated while respecting the Inca foundations of the building, the walls and arches, and the carved features, to accommodate a new concept and character. Throughout its design, the project seeks to establish a balance between the original materials of the house and the new elements. At the same time, the studio worked with local artisans and craftsmen to create a bespoke furniture collection to serve the needs of the different consumer experiences within the café.

The inner patio houses the main area of the cafeteria, where Estudio Soroche incorporated a selection of materials and shapes that would blend in and, at the same time, bring new energy to the building. The colonial balcony was restored, revealing its original wood and carvings and the central Inca wall was given prominence using appropriate lighting. The counter of the café was conceived as the project’s focal point of communication and the main setting for the coffee preparations. The counter is built in two blocks, one clad in solid wood and painted plywood panels and the other with terrazzo and blue-colored metal profiles. The define a close and transparent interaction between the barista and the customer by integrating the seating and preparation area.
